”Detroit Auto Show Continues To Dominate, Snags New Toyota Prius And Lexus Hybrid Debuts
The Detroit News is reporting group vice president and general manager for Toyota of the Americas, Bob Carter, has confirmed the 2010 Toyota Prius will be debuting at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and will be joined by a uniquely styled and appointed version for Lexus. The Prius was set to move upmarket relative to its former iterations, but with a Lexus version now on the way, Toyota's own marketplace may be getting crowded. But the bigger story is how this news makes things far more interesting for January's Detroit Auto Show.More »
Lincoln MKT Crossover Confirmed, To Get EcoBoost
Ford today officially confirmed that it would be producing the Lincoln MKT and equipping it with the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine, good for an estimated 340 horsepower and 340 lb.-ft. of twist, in place of a V8. Unlike the MKT Concept, the production crossover will get three rows and probably fewer Saworvski crystals. A "fuel-efficient" six speed will be the transmission of choice for both the EcoBoost V6 and the standard issue, normally aspirated 3.7-liter V6. The new 7-passenger CUV, which will debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, will feature technologies such as SYNC, blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert. Full details in the press release below the jump.More »
2010 Ford Mustang To Debut at LA Auto Show
Earlier today, when Ford announced plans to counter its largest ever quarterly loss, we also learned the 2010 Ford Mustang would be revealed to pumping bass and epileptic-unfriendly lights at the 2008 LA Auto Show in November. We know the car arrives in showrooms early next year, and what's a new car without the lasers and dry ice of an auto show unveiling? But why LA and not Detroit? More »Suzuki Breaks Up With Detroit Auto Show, Needs Some Space
Suzuki has joined Porsche in abandoning the Detroit Auto Show, though explicitly this time because of a lack of space. Seriously, have you ever driven through Cobo Arena? Tiny place. They have to put cars on the roof it's so small. This is bad news for Detroit, considering the NAIAS already threatened to leave if they didn't get an expanded convention center. Since it's freaking winter and we're covering it, may we suggest somewhere warmer like Miami? And what's more, why does Suzuki need any extra room? More »NAIAS May Leave Detroit If Organizers Don't Get Cobo Expansion
The complaints about the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) staged yearly in January in Detroit fall into three categories A) it's in January B) It's in Detroit and C) Cobo Hall is just too small for the event. Well after the plan was announced to expand Cobo Hall by some 120,000 square feet, the organizers are concerned the politicians in Lansing will be politicians and fail to deliver the goods on the deal. Such fears are leading to statements from show chair Joe Serra like "We want to keep it here, but time has run out." More »

We saw the Cadillac CTS Coupe concept in person at the Detroit Auto Show in January. We've also seen the production version of the CTS Coupe in spy photos last week. Despite all that CTSexy action out there, it's taken a wee while for the folks at the General's luxe brand to deliver some of the hot press shot action. Yes, seriously, we haven't seen a single press-managed picture of the talk of the town from this past Detroit show. But despite the wait, we're still happy as hell to have them for you below. Enjoy.

Prius Based Lexus Wagon In The Works?
Seems the chairman of the #1 best automaker from the land of the rising sun, Ken Watanabe, liked our Maximum Wagon Day so much, he's creating a Lexus wagon from a next gen Prius. The amicable blokes over at the Trend which has to do with Motors are reporting Toyota will be bringing two dedicated hybrids to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. More »

Detroit Auto Show: Hummer HX Records Off-Roading Adventures Directly to iPod
Despite its relationship to the Halo Warthog, the Hummer HX made a pretty big splash at the Detroit Auto Show. One of its coolest features is the front-facing camera that's integrated into the rear-view mirror. Throw in a docking slot to record your off-roading adventures directly to an iPod and you've got something quite cool, indeed. Sure, the HX is obviously very conceptual, but this is a feature that doesn't seem too farfetched. Of course, it's also a feature that may be destined to document tragedy, especially in this YouTube age.

Embargoes are Such a Buzz-Kill
I had the opportunity to be a guest on WDIV's Flashpoint yesterday. The show is the Detroit NBC affiliate's micro-sized version of Meet The Press. As you'd expect from a Meet The Press Detroit version — it was all about the auto industry, and this week the topic of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show was front and center. While I got a chance to talk about the enthralling topics of fuel economy (via GM's garbage-laden ethanol announcement on day one of the show), the marketing hype that is the hybrid and of course, GM and jobs. How exciting. I didn't get a chance to talk about the one thing I really wanted to talk about — the issue of "buzz." More »

When we saw the 2009 Honda Pilot in person, we couldn't help but notice it looked conspicuously different from the Honda Pilot sketch released earlier by Honda. It's not news that sketches are often exaggerated versions of the production models (few production models end up with 40-inch rims, for instance). But the Honda Pilot sketch v. Honda Pilot reality is a particularly striking difference. Our analysis below the jump.

NAIAS Jalopnik Caption Contest Winner
When we held the Detroit Auto Show caption contest we scoured the archives for an entertaining shot. My quick question-and-answer session with one of the Nissan Forum's product managers didn't give me a chance to see everything that the Nissan Forum is packing. So I sent our intrepid video reported back to capture more features on this conceptual parenting-mobile. I can't believe I missed the the Bose speakers and subwoofer—for, you know, when you want to turn that quietly idling soccer-mom transport into a throbbing soccer-mom cocktail hour (while parked, of course).

Mazda Furai Concept Running in Display Stand
You thought you had seen the last of the 2008 Mazda Furai concept didn't you? We certainly had enough coverage on the lusty concept that didn't make Popular Mechanics' Top 10 New Cars of Detroit list. What with the teaser photos, track video, live reveal shots, and super sneaky close ups - but no, we're not done yet. Detroit Auto Show: Michigan Plans To Expand Cobo Convention Center
The Cobo Center, home to the Detroit Auto Show, provides approximately $600 million annually to the local economies, with much of that money coming from the show itself. With that in mind, state and local officials are working on a plan to spend $595 million to expand and renovate the center. This change would include adding an additional 120,000 square feet, which would create room for even more automakers (C'mon Tata, show us your Nanos). We're supportive of the idea, if only to create space for more surprise Chinese test drives and booth babes. [AP via MLive]
